Halyard
From MITNA
A halyard is any line that is used to hoist up a sail.
A typical sloop sailboat might have three halyards, one for the mainsail, one for the jib (or genoa), and one for the spinnaker.
Halyards are usually rope, however it is usually important that the halyard does not stretch, so sometimes halyards are either part, or all steel cables.
