In the event of a hurricane or other big storm approaching, the following should be done:

  • If two mooring pennants are not available, add one
    • Anchor rode, using the shackle to attach to the ball and the rode to the cleat
    • Or if not: a dockline as a second mooring line, tied with a bowline to the mooring ball and secured the other cleat on the bow
  • Add chafe gear to all mooring line contact points
  • Remove foresail, leaving a bare pole. Secure halyard elsewhere, using storage line to keep furler head from skying
  • Depending on severity, either tie lines around mainsail or remove it from the boom and secure it below decks
  • Ensure all hatches are dogged
  • Remove all canvas covers
  • Replace ventilators with flat caps
  • Ensure all seacocks are closed -- definitely sink -- questions about others?
  • Remove the radar mast and lash below
