It is common for sailboats to have a strobe light mounted at the top of the mast. This light is considered an emergency distress signal and should only be used in the event of an emergency.

According to COLREGS, strobe lights are not to be used in international waters. However, it is acceptable to use a strobe as an emergency distress signal on inland waters.
