The goal of this electronics refit is to standardize the communication protocol onboard Mashnee to NMEA2000, improve reliability of instruments, integrate radar and AIS consistently, and support racing goals. To this end, we have decided that we should upgrade to a B&G system because it has more advanced sailing/racing features than other MFDs (multifunction displays) and it integrates with our current radar. We want to keep the MFD visible from the cockpit (using the existing swing-out box, ideally).
Key components
- B&G MFD: Make new box for 9" MFD (MFD dimensions 11.3" wide x 6.5 tall x 3.5" deep). Current MFD box (9 7/8" x 9 7/8" x 5")
- GPS, Triducer, and wind sensor (wired versions of b&g sail performance pack):
- Speed, depth, temperature sensor triducer ($400): https://pro.westmarine.com/bg-dst-810-thru-hull-transducer-with-depth-speed-and-temperature-20268405.html
- GPS sensor ($300): https://www.westmarine.com/bg-zg100-gps-antenna-20535100.html
- Wired wind sensor: ($549): https://pro.westmarine.com/bg-ws310-wind-pack-with-20-meter-cable-and-interface-19237262.html
- Micro-c backbone kit ($60): https://www.westmarine.com/lowrance-micro-c-backbone-starter-kit-14273858.html
- Any additional NMEA 2k cables (suggested is 1x2m and 1x5m)
Specific tasks
- Run NMEA 2k backbone from mast to the electronics
- Remove all other deprecated electronics wiring/equipment
- Connect vespermarine AIS to new NMEA 2k backbone
- Convert fluxgate compass seatalk NG to NMEA 2k. Confirm correct male/female end requirements
Major outstanding questions
- Zeus3S at 9" or Zeus3 at 7"? Long-term support for Zeus3
- Wireless display options: it is nice to be able to have additional displays in the cockpit dedicated to speed, wind, depth in addition to the chartplotter. It would be worthwhile to see if by purchasing the Raymarine Micro-talk wireless gateway (https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=3800935) we can make all the new instruments and these displays just work with a Seatalkng to NMEA 2000 converter. Then we can use the existing displays as is. Otherwise:
- iPad mount that could probably work that into the existing mounts on the bulkhead($57): https://railblazausa.com/product/railblaza-screengrabba-tablet-holder/
- B&G H5000 system as supplement to chartplotter
- 2x Graphic Display ($1,199 x2) https://www.bandg.com/bg/type/instruments/h5000graphic-display/ How do we mount this? Can we build our own case and hang somewhere? what about data/power cable?
- x1 above and X1 Race display? ($989) https://www.bandg.com/bg/type/instruments/h5000race-display/
- Probably need an H5000 processor:
- Hydra ($2,199): https://www.bandg.com/en-au/bg/type/instruments/h5000cpu-hydra/
- Hercules ($3,599) - integrates polars (https://www.bandg.com/en-au/bg/type/instruments/h5000cpu-hercules/)
OTHER Option (but different system):
- Sailmon wireless displays - really powerful racing features, can integrate over NMEA 2k with the below interface. It charges using a charger pad we can hook up to 12v via USB. A more expensive but more robust option; double benefit of redundant GPS signal; has IMU built in too.
- Display ($1,049): https://www.ronstan.us/marine5/product.asp?ProdNo=SM-MAX2
- NMEA2k interface (~$200):critical; needed to actually display speed, depth, etc. data. Can't find in U.S. but seems to be branded NavLink... -- https://shop.sailmon.com/product/max-nmea-interface-2000/
- Wireless charger ($48): https://www.ronstan.us/marine5/product.asp?ProdNo=SM-MAXCHARGE
- Screen protector ($37): https://www.ronstan.us/marine5/product.asp?ProdNo=SM-MAXSCREEN
- Mounting bracket: to mount on existing raymarine wireless slide piece -in the box.
