This is the checklist of things to do before getting underway.

  • Unlock cabin, starboard lazarette, and stern lazarette. Stow locks in top drawer of nav station.
  • Remove companionway boards. Stow in cabin.
  • Make log entry. Include at least the following:
    • date and time
    • name of each person on board
    • engine hours
  • Remove guppy. Stow guppy in bucket in stern lazarette.
  • Remove binnacle compass cover. Stow cover in top drawer of nav station.
  • Set lower battery switch to "1" (pointer to 9 o'clock position)
  • Turn on the following breakers on the nav station:
    • Main
    • Nav Inst
  • Check bilge water level.
  • Check engine oil and coolant levels.
  • Check recent log entries.
  • Check head thru-hull valves:
    • white valve MUST be closed
    • blue Y-valve MUST be set to pump to holding tank
    • open yellow valve if head is to be used
  • Check holding tank level (in port closet in V-berth)
  • Give basic safety lecture for new sailors:
    • life jackets
    • fire extinguishers
    • man overboard procedures
    • VHF radio operation
    • avoiding the boom
    • use of head
