It is common for sailboats to have a strobe light mounted at the top of the mast.  This light is considered an emergency distress signal and should only be used in the event of an emergency.

According to [[COLREGS]], strobe lights are not to be used in international waters.  However, it is acceptable to use a strobe as an emergency distress signal on inland waters.
